Canal & River Trust is the UK’s largest canal charity and looks after over 2,000 miles of canals and navigable rivers, caring for the waterways, embankments, culverts and reservoirs as well as the bridges, locks and towpaths.
I worked with the Trust’s West Midlands team for two years to help create an annual review of activity, highlighting the work of volunteers and staff across the region, which includes landscapes as diverse as the Welsh borders, Staffordshire, the Cotswolds and the urban waterways of Birmingham.
With a proactive PR operation, member and volunteer newsletters and regular monthly reports, there was no shortage of source material. My job was to organise and edit it into a structured and logical report that would celebrate achievements, highlight challenges, address crucial issues, communicate key messages and give all stakeholders a real sense of the previous twelve months’ activities.
As someone who lives in the region and loves walking and cycling on canal towpaths, the annual reports for 2022 and 2023 were two of the most enjoyable projects I’ve worked on.
